Jean Daniélou aimait Jean-Baptiste. La plupart de ses travaux –; scientifiques, spirituels ou pastoraux –; font référence à ce " dernier des prophètes ", ou plutôt à son moment, car ce temps intermédiaire, historiquement daté, charnière entre les deux Testaments, a toujours fasciné le chercheur comme le pasteur. Le long récit que les Évangiles consacrent à la vie de Jean-Baptiste en atteste l'importance pour l'exposé de la foi chrétienne. Depuis la Visitation jusqu'à la Théophanie du baptême du Christ, l'accomplissement des Écritures se fait de plus en plus imminent. En sa vocation, sa prédication, son effacement et sa décollation, Jean-Baptiste incarne l'histoire du salut en train d'advenir. À la lumière des Écritures et des commentaires qu'en ont donnés les premiers Pères, le cardinal Daniélou n'a cessé de scruter la signification théologale de tous ces événements en leur réalité. Le présent ouvrage est en grande partie le fruit d'une retraite que Jean Daniélou prêcha au Cercle Saint-Jean-Baptiste, groupe de spiritualité et de culture missionnaires dont il fut l'aumônier et le guide pendant une trentaine d'années. Le nom même de ce cercle de laïcs renvoie à celui qui a vu et annoncé, affichant par là sa spécificité à la fois contemplative et missionnaire. Le " voici " du Précurseur qu'a retenu l'iconographie byzantine résume en effet l'essentiel de la démarche missionnaire. The bulk of his work, whether scientific, spiritual or pastoral, refers to this 'last of the prophets' - or rather to his epoch, for this intermediate historical period – a decisive moment between the two Testaments - was a source of endless fascination for Daniélou the researcher as much as Daniélou the pastor. The lengthy account of John the Baptist's life in the Gospels is proof of his key role in presenting the Christian religion. From the Visitation to the Theophany of the Baptism of Christ, the fulfilment of the Scriptures becomes increasingly imminent. John the Baptist, in his vocation, his teachings, his humility and even his decapitation, illustrates the advent of salvation. In the light of the Scriptures, and commentaries provided by the Early Fathers, Cardinal Daniélou tirelessly scrutinized the theologal meaning of all these events in their reality. This book is, to a great extent, the fruit of a retreat preached by Jean Daniélou at the Cercle Saint-Jean-Baptiste, a spiritual and cultural missionary group he served as chaplain and guide for thirty years. The very name of this secular circle makes direct reference to the prophet and herald of the Gospels, and proclaims its specifically contemplative and missionary character. The Precursor's 'Here is the Lamb of God', depicted in Byzantine iconography, sums up the organisation's missionary approach. As Cardinal Daniélou often confided, 'This is why his testimony is so precious to us.'
